Great list, Thomas. In the spirit of fascination, I just picked up the book "A Field Guide to The Hidden World of Everyday Design" by Roman Mars. It is an illustrative book that "explores the origins and other fascinating stories behind everything from power grids and fire escapes to drinking fountains and street signs." Excited to have this as a part of my rep·er·toire of books for expanding my mind.
